Say no to Symantec
I'm an advocate for open source software and I recommend it for clients for whom it is a good fit. Now, you don't use the big "fine" hammer as a tool for all solutions, but in many, many situations not only is an open source alternative a cost saving decision, but also offers superior performance.

In my own office we used to be on Microsoft Exchange and used a Symantec email gateway antivirus and antispam package. Unfortunately after a live update some rules were automagically updated and the system decided it was a nice time to rescan the entire info store and delete all emails with attachments. The next day was not fun for me.

The next day we dumped the Symantec crap, and installed ASSP. Not only was ASSP relatively bug free, but once trained, it was nearly 100% effective - far better than Symantec's solutions. On top of that, the clamav integration was excellent as well.

Within a couple of months we dumped Windows and Exchange for a free/open source solutions: Linux + Scalix, and have not looked back. On the desktop for the two Windows workstations we do still have, Moon Secure Antivirus (open source antivirus which uses the ClamAV signatures) has worked out great.

For clients with Exchange, I always recommend and install ASSP. I've switched quite a few clients from proprietary solutions to ASSP and it has worked out great for each one.

Are current open source solutions right for everyone? No. Compared to Exchange, Scalix, Zimbra, and other open source solutions are severely lacking. However in many situations not only is open source a reasonable alternative, they are vastly superior (such as ASSP).
