how this shakes out. The government will be the ones selling them to parents.

The cost to parents would be calculated on a sliding scale, he said, with low-income families getting the laptop for free and the top price at ?50 (US$78).

Intel spokeswoman Agnes Kwan said parents of young school children will be able to choose between computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system and ones with an open-source Linux operating system.

Seems strange to me that the OS choice is left to the parents, so I guess this is more getting laptops into kids hands as opposed to a pre-configured tool for learning? (no, not a slam, just wondering, both are good)

In any case, like most of these stories, I will be wondering how MS will find a way to get XP the pre-installed default for all of these computers. If I had to guess at the methodology, XP will be installed by default on 100%, and a CD with Linux will be available through mail in offer? grin
