RE: Network Neutrality
Tom:

You're documenting Google's efforts to position itself as the front-door to the broadband, wireless Internet. I think you're correct and it is not as benign an effort as the purveyor of "do no evil" would have you believe. But I also think that it's not "game over" (yet) for a content or service-neutral Internet, as the Net Neutrality dialogue begins winding its boa constrictor like body more around politics and policy than technical constraints and market positioning.

Google has been very successful in moving its "search box" to the forefront of almost every smartphone. As you note in your article, it has ingrained its maps service in the 2.5G iPhone and successive generations 3G through 4G, which once again gives it "on-the-glass" primacy. But I think such attempts at pre-emption will invite heightened competition from innovative firms in such areas as mobile social networking and mobile commerce, where Google may be the point of ingress but doesn't have the end-to-end transaction processing capabilities to seal the deal.

It's important to stay vocal as the dialogue moves from the political arena(s) to the practical deployment arena. My concern has always been that proponents of Net Neutrality win the policy battle but lose the neutral access war.
