Subscriber envy? That's a ridiculous assumption
Verizon's 67.2 to AT&T's 71? Wasn't that gap larger after the ATT/Cingular deal? Looked as though industry analysts were right at the time, that Verion would overtake them after a few years, so why would this be done just to add customers if they where already on their way to doing just that?

Could it really have anything to do with:

-Verizon gets access to 34 states by acquiring Alltel including 57 rural markets that the company doesn?t serve.
-The Alltel purchase will be immediately accretive to earnings excluding integration costs.
-Verizon Wireless reckons that it will save more than $9 billion in capital and operating expenses.


Nah, must be subscriber envy, a great reason to risk 28.1 billion dollars
