Apple is clobbering MS with its ads
Apple has done a stellar job redefining the rules when it comes to selling technology in the consumer market. Its products are solid, they are extremely well designed, and it advertises like crazy with very impactful ads, in a non-stop fashion. When it comes to the Zune, MS has gotten the first 2 parts of Apple?s strategy down (and even beat), but it has done poorly in having a sustained advertising campaign - which has made all the difference in its competition with Apple. MS has also done relatively poorly selling Vista against Macs in the consumer market, on account of its non-existent counter to Apple?s Mac ad campaign. MS just do anything. Even if MS didn?t mind Apple gaining more market share on account of monopoly regulators continually looking over its shoulders, it really should blunt Apple?s sustained efforts to make the PC look like tool for bumbling fools ? as this is having a cancerous effect on the PC industry. Also, Apple has shown that sustained advertising blows open markets in ways people didn?t think possible.

MS therefore has to step up its marketing efforts in the consumer market. It first needs to produce solid technologies with great designs. It then needs to advertise them in sustained, impactful ways in various media ? including TV & billboards.
