It's a scenario we're prepping for
Telecommunting is still not officially supported across the board by my company. It varies by department. But after talking with our IT folks it's clear that we're positioning ourselves to make it more universally possible - even if the policy is still not officially supported company-wide.

My company is 1/3 Macs, 2/3 PCs. On our most recent round of Mac updates last fall, all the Mac workers were transitioned over to Macbooks and Macbook Pros instead of workstations (2/3 of Mac users previously were using G5s - although we still have a dozen or so Mac Pro workstations for consultants and video editing.) In our upcoming round of PC updates for the remainder of the company this fall, I was told it was planned for everyone to be transitioned over to Thinkpads (where only 1/3 of PC users had them previously.)

Working in a department where limited telecommuting is allowed we can clearly see the benefits to the company. A telecommuter is essentially always on-call (even if they don't intend to be) and far far FAR more likely to be productive during off-hours than non-telecommuters. Despite the blurred lines between work/home I still love having the option though (especially with a family.) And I've often made the point to our HR department that having telecommuting as an official policy would be a major recruiting incentive (especially since they're apparently getting increasingly cheap with some of the newer hires . . . hey we don't pay as well, but at least you can work from home a few days a week.)
