That is "Pushing Java FX to its limit?" and other stuff
Enterprise 2.0 is pretty boring . . .

If that is "Pushing Java FX to its limit," then they have a very, very long ways to go before they can even begin to compete with any other 3D engine. The last time I saw 3D graphics that primitive was on my 486.

One thing I do know is that if anybody can compete with the Silverlight and Air stuff, it's Java. Although they have historically lagged behind, I know that Java is plenty capable of everything the other platforms are capable of: Even though they are best known for their applets, Java has always been capable of regular applications as well, and the ability to create applications that can be used on both the Internet and the desktop is becoming more important than ever.

The question is, can Sun make Java popular again? They're always been pretty weak in the marketing to the average consumer and convincing developers to develop Java applications.

I will say that the new vector graphics will be a big step towards becoming more competitive with Flash and Silverlight - traditionally, sprite based graphics has been the norm for Java, and probably held it back, since it's not quite as scalable as vector graphics.

Being able to take the applet out of the browser looks very nice! This is, in my opinion, where all of this "Web 2.0," AJAX, Silverlight, etc stuff is really headed.

Everybody thinks everything is going to be "in the cloud." The truth is, it isn't. It's going to be seamless, and it will run with or without the "cloud." The "cloud" will just be one of many places it can be located. The future is not necessarily tied to the browser. The browser is simply where all of this began.

People claim that the OS is becoming less important: Well, the browser may become less important as well. In fact, both will become less important. What will become important is the content, not the delivery tool.
