RE: Psystar's Open Computer review: Is it worth it?
Pystar has been living dangerously. First of all, they ship
with an Leopard upgrade as its OS. That's starting off VERY
shaky. Obviously, Apple let them do it, I suspect for
research purposes. A shrink wrapped copy of Windows
Vista Professional is very expensive, much more expensive
than the $99-$129 price of a Leopard upgrade. You can
run Vista Pro legally in Parallels or another form of
virtualization on a Mac, but Microsoft won't let you run
Windows Home or an upgrade on a Mac. Because Apple let
Pystar do this for long enough to start making a little
money, Apple is in a powerful position, be it for a future
partnership or just to shut Pystar down.

As for buying a Pystar computer, I wouldn't. I can
understand why someone might buy one. It looks like a
cheap PC. I'm not suggesting that all Windows PCs are
cheap crap. There is a lot of good hardware that runs
Windows, but like a Mac a really good Windows PC costs a
lot. The tin box models that cost $400 are crap hardware.
All Apple hardware is well made. In fact, the superior
software hardware integration is a major reason the Mac
experience is superior to the Windows experience. Apple
ALWAYS rates the highest in the industry in customer
satisfaction. A Mac is built from ground up with the user in
mind. Windows is designed with its main purpose to run
on a very large variety of hardware. With Vista Microsoft
has designed several versions of their OS with more
specific users in mind. The low end varieties of Windows
are made to be put on cheap tin box PCs. You probably
wouldn't run 64 bit Vista professional on a $400 PC. Then
it would be more expensive since the OS license is almost
the cost of the machine. I've used Macs professionally for
many years. I wouldn't use anything else for my work, but
different people have different needs and for many a really
cheap PC or a Mac clone might be something they might
want.
