- We are sure that Portal is the platform to do Enterprise 2.0
-
I totally agree that the mashup & community concepts will continuously develop and with Generation 2.0 there will internet users just expect all to be delivered on their own MyPage. Financials / Insurance, Media, Travel etc. will all eventually have to use technologies like WSRP and widgets to get their applications and content into the digital personal space of the internet consumers.
But the way to develop such initiatives on portal is difficult and requires a lot of custom work. Still today, Portals still remain a niche in the IT domain without many suppliers of standard software. At Componence we try to develop standard portlets with integrated Web 2.0 functionality. Currently many research states that many man years of development are required to get a portal online. This should not be true, the IT market needs more standard portlets to solve this problem.
While Enterprise 2.0 is getting more into the picture. The Enterprise tends to focus mainly on 'internal facing' portals are being addressed to increase collaboration, while I believe that with these 'remote delivery' technologies Enterprises can more easily offer their services and products into different specific channels.
Portal still requires long term IT vision and the required investments. Often compared with standard CMS / ECM / WCM portal still looks too expensive in a 1-3 year period. But with regard to the future where online services and products need to be provided through dozens or even hundreds of different communities or partner portals, the ROI calculation for portal can be made a lot better.
But when a company does look towards Generation 2.0 as their future customers and Facebook as the place where this generation can be found, portal should become an easy and necessary choice. - Posted by: hhvo Posted on: 04/28/08 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
