RE: Why Microsoft is looking at Yahoo
I am not sure why the author (Larry Dignan) believes that Microsoft should not try and acquire the number 2 player in the search market but rather go for number 5 or 6. The numbers are why Yahoo looks interesting to Microsoft, that is why they are trying to acquire it.

From marketshare.hitslink.com:

77.70% - Google Global
12.06% - Yahoo Global
3.25% - MSN Global
2.40% - Microsoft Live Search
2.20% - AOL Global
1.36% - Ask Global
0.20% - other

Now, given these numbers, if (as suggested in this piece) Microsoft were to dump the prospect of acquiring Yahoo (12%) to increase their combined 5.65% with both MSN and Live, then they would have at most 7.85% (still a distant 3rd place in the market).

Other sources provide similar numbers as to the market hare, which is what they are interested in. This is not "we want to acquire an on-line portal" but rather, "we want to increase our market share quickly (and something about taking on the market leader).
