Maybe it's a lark ... or something else ...
He should have a quadrillion Google stock options in his pocket, so he doesn't need the money. He might be taking the job as a personal lark, doing something that is completely different from his old job.

And this is total speculation, but he may be a scout. Google is ramping up as a content owner, not just a search engine to others' content. Looking at the long term, Google could be sending out senior execs who could forge possible alliances or set up takeover targets. He could well end up working for Google again in the future, but this time as a line executive rather than staff. Who knows?

CIO jobs are becoming spring-boards to the top for some companies, and not just IT ones. But it's a challenge for a CIO to make the transition from a support role to a line role within the same company. You just get stuck with the label of "techno-geek" no matter that you've been a strategic thinker in tune with the business plan from step one.

Anyway, I have to run off and send my CV to Google now ...
