What's your point?
I'm trying to understand what point you're making about Red Hat's performance. Are you saying it's good, bad, optimistic, pessimistic?

Anyway, Steven J Vaughn-Nichols' point about Red Hat making money, and continuing to grow it's revenue and profit year over year, is very valid. There are still many doubters regarding the open source business model (just look at many posters at ZDNet). So SJVN trumpeting Red Hat's success is a good thing, because many people still need to be reminded.

That said, the scale of the open source business model will never match that of the proprietary behemoths (Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, etc), where revenue and profit are measured in the multi billions. The open source model, which is more services and support oriented, can and does produce revenue in the 100s of millions, but it won't go much higher than that.

But that's still a truck load of money nonetheless, and plenty of profit, and plenty of jobs, and plenty for invenstors.
