As I have been saying, Google should be
working 24 hours a day to add a Java runtime to gears. They need to work with Mozilla (and Sun) to use the same VM as for the rest of the functions.

With a rich execution environment, the difference between desktop applications ant web applications will be disappearing

Well, BIG differences will remain - desktop applications will continue to be a big hassle, and continue to be very expensive.
