It's the platform
I agree, the problems aren't with the actual processor (current Phenom problems aside). It is with the platform as a whole. Intel has always had more control due to the fact they make both the prevalent chipset found on Intel platforms, and in some cases, the actual motherboard. In addition, most of the motherboards with embedded graphics are Intel based, and you have a tightly integrated platform. This represents a pretty high standard that other motherboard manufacturers have to compete with, and do so partially by adding features rather than changing components such as the Intel chipset. That's not to say they won't create an Intel platform based on other chipsets, but why mess with a package deal

AMD has concentrated manufacturing on the processor, and mainly publishes specifications for the chipsets and motherboards, though with ATi in the fold they have taken on more in the chipset category. Being they don't actually manufacture a complete platform themselves, other than the occasional reference platform, there is more room for variance in the implementation of the platform.

I have also had mixed results on AMD systems, but the issues were with the motherboard, not the actual processor.
