RE: 40 percent of US pop that hate e-mail
The reason that Web 2.0 is such an enhancement to an enterprise involves the 40 percent of the US population that are described as empathetic communicators. This large minority is characterized by the general belief that email is rude - it hirts feelings because of its direct-to-the-point nature and is especially annoying when the communicator could just walk down the hall to tell the receiver what they need to know.

In the US you can hardly do business if you limit yourself to voice communication and fortunately Wiki's and blogs replace telephony and meetings and are viewed as less "rude" than email.

I find that a Blog or Wiki that allows the poster to edit after the fact is very useful because when a post is considered rude by someone, it can be changed to better reflect the intent - assuming the intend wasn't to be rude.

In most regards, e-mail will die as an internal mechanism of communication at well run organizations and will be replaced with Wikis and Blogs (Web 2.0). This is not only to its better acceptance by the empathetic communicators but is also owing to the use of email for viral propagation and is owing to email attachments which are present in multiple copies, one for each person getting the emai,l but are present in only one place in Web 2.0.

I still have trouble believing there are large organizations that have not already implemented a corporate Wiki and RSS. The RSS allows executives to be notified when ever a Wiki page of interest - like say an implementation plan or policy - gets changed.

It serves as a dashboard of change management where executives can slow or speed change just by reviewing the feeds and then communicating priorities.

RSS also alerts executives and others monitoring documents when there are issues with the documents - like documents that are submitted for indexing but have not been finalized - as tracked in a database. Every court system will have such Wiki - RSS mechanisms.

It is my opinion that our profession - IT - is responsible for any organizations not currently implementing Web 2.0. Two many of our kind have prohibited the upgrade of the IE browser or the loading of Firefox which is needed for RSS and two many of our profession are delaying for budget when budget isn't necessary owing to the many free Wiki products available.

Of course we all would like Sharepoint but in today's IT budget constraint world, it is time to stop using the benefits of Web 2.0 as justification for it.
