Oracle: are they scared or ashamed ?
EnterpriseDB should have this profit announcement on the first page of their sales presentation.

The money is in the magic. Databases store stuff and retrieve stuff and provide you with an interface to do that. They've been doing it for a long time. Letters, numbers, pictures, video, audio - that?s pretty much it.

There is little magic left in Databases so Oracle makes some up. Larry needs a new Lear jet - to get that the shareholders have to stay happy. So the prices stay high until he finds another way to pay for it from BEA or somewhere else. The product gets bloated with useless upgrade features nobody understands and you need to hire a brain the size of a planet to understand them. Oracle services anyone?

Oracle are milking their locked in customers for what is a capability that can be delivered almost for free and supported for a lot less than 22% of Oracles list.

22% of list maintenance means that after dropping their pants on their overpriced license to lock you in to the software, you are paying to re-buy the product almost every two years.

Ten years ago only a spotty geek in the bowels of the building considered Linux for the enterprise. Now nobody with a brain plans around anything else.

The open source Database is next. PostgreSQL is here and it works.
