They're junk
As an advertiser I think they're a joke too. Text-based ads on any sort of social application (in the old days, email and forums - these days social networking sites) are always some of the weakest performing ad units money can buy. Even though most advertisers are only paying per click instead of on a cpm basis it's still a waste.

The only time ads in this space that are remotely effective are image-based. People complain about the ads in Yahoo email, but that's because they're image-based and people actually notice them. Gmail's text ads are basically invisible. Google could obviously push image-based ads through there if they wanted (just like you can do on much of the Adsense network) but when you're trying to gain marketshare in terms of registered users you'll do anything you can to be unobtrusive. They're making enough revenue from search alone they don't have to worry about maximizing revenue from other areas . . . yet. But that time will eventually come no doubt.
