Not such a bad idea
I think the press they will get if they manage it will be well worth the investment. Plus, they're unlikely to develop the technologies themselves and more likely to buy up and develop a startup energy co, providing valuable cash to the renewables industry.
As for turning a profit, I think the green credentials will pay for themselves. Either that or they could sell the electricity.
