- A better example of a web desktop

You should check out Sitecore's desktop. Sitecore is a .NET based CMS, and the desktop was created with XAML but does a server side conversion to pure XHTML and Javascript. Like Salesforce you can write your own apps, but you do it using standard .NET and XAML with the standard Vista UI elements, so the development environment is very robust. We're using it now for a large project and it's very very cool. I've posted a screenshot:
