Virtualization market: old news
Why is it that the history of computer technology has to repeat itself as if no one knew it happened?

Mainframes went through this market decades ago!

If journalist bothered to review the mainframe computer technology history they'd see that the current virtualization market is a repeat of the Plug Compatible Machine (PCM) market of the 70s and 80s.

First was software virtualization in the IBM operating system VM. Then the manufacturers (IBM, Amdahl, Fujitsu, etc.) developed the hardware virtualization technologies. Even DEC, with the VAX series, got into the operating system in the hardware layer idea.

The concepts and techniques aren't new! The market development paths aren't unknown or untested!

Every other industry or business knows its history and journalists compare current trends, ideas, methods and performance to previous business cycles, some cycles decades ago. How many times have we heard of a comparison of the current stock market to the crash of 1929 or 1987?

Why is computer technology so myopic?

Why aren't journalist comparing this virtualization market with the previous one?

If anything, I'm just tired of the media blitz that touts these new ideas, concepts and technologies as if they are something totally new when prior art is easily found in the news, trade journals and technical publications of not to long ago.
