The problem is structural
Much of the infrastructure that powers the internet was designed for a previous generation when client-server was considered leading edge. Processors are an order of magnitude faster, disks store 100X more data, bandwidth is more plentiful . . . but the way most of these systems are put together and run has changed little in several years.
