Definitely a strength of Yahoo's
Local is one area in which Yahoo has been notably stronger than Google, even in the past. It's biggest problem in the past has been weak integration of Yahoo's excellent subproperties. This tighter integration definitely takes it up to another level. Local is especially important in the mobile space (another area where Yahoo is arguably as strong, if not stronger than Google for now.)

All providers are going to struggle when you get down to smaller towns. As someone's who's worked with several local media sites in the past, that's because there's simply not as much content to work with. There's less reviews, less events, less everything.

They did a good job of incorporating Upcoming.org. I wish they'd try to more notably leverage Flickr in some capacity. I know there's a Flickr group in seemingly every city. It wouldn't have any direct business purpose, but would be nice for sheer browsing entertainment and would likely get some people more involved with Flickr/Yahoo.
