Apple is changing the rules
For a long time the phone companies have been in the drivers
seat when it comes to the OEMs. They had no problems making
their demands stick, be ti turning off features so the phone
company can charge for it or limiting features so it will work on
existing networks.

The iPhone changed that, allowing Apple to not only get a
percentage of the monthly revenue, but also establish the
network enhancements that fit the iPhone features.

Now the challenge is for the other OEMs to develop new phones
that will have sufficient demand to allow them to make demands
on the phone companies. It'll probably take a year or two for new
products to come out that will allow the OEMs to set feature
standards like Apple has done, but when the dust settles in a few
years I believe that consumers will be the winners.
