This move by Intel in purchasing a VMware stake needs to be paid attention to just as the multi-processor multi-core move by Intel should have been paid attention to. Only Jobs and the Fins really got it right. Itel tried hard to get Microsoft interested. It is pure management failure that gives us Xbox and Vista.

Both the Xbox and Vista's lack of success is directly related to multi processor multi core. Xbox hardware failures were predictable because a single processor running at high clock speed generates damaging heat. The more demanding Xbox users simply burn them up.

Vista and Office 7, because they were built for single processors, do not benchmark well against products built with Java - even free ones like open office.

Java takes advantage of multi-processors and multi-cores with little programming effort because Java was built with the notion of multi-processors and cores, a notion proven in the mainframe environment that would have found its way to PCs a decade earlier if not for illegal use of monopoly power.

But that is history. Now for the future.

When you can create a web appliance on a web server by simply creating a virtual operating system and loading software it makes things like the iPhone really fly.

Those who criticize iPhone because it doesn't allow software loading need to think about that. The iPhone is a network computer if it can run web appliances. Oh isn't that a blast from the past - network computer. But dumb terminals and network computers look good to large corporations and it will look good to all in short order.

VMware breaks the operating system upgrade cycle. For example a virtual basic program that will not operate on Windows XP service pack 2 but does operate on an older Windows operating sytstem is given a new lease on life with virtualization. Because the web appliance is virtual, virus issues are lessoned greatly, perhaps eliminated. Hence there will be a lot less conversion of old VB programs to dot Net. In fact I think the entire market for that kind of work has been eliminated. Software that was to be thrown away owing to a notion of shelf life may be used indefinitely owing to this disruptive technology pioneered by VmWare .
