Web2.0: Beginning of the end for Corporate Computing?
The observations of this article are spot on! As the service levels provided by FREE Web 2.0 (information infrastructure) services (utilties) surpasses the service levels and functionality provided by corporate IT departments, users will increasingly use and depend on FREE services and shun internal IT services thus reducing the dependence and need for internal IT departments. Corporate IT doesn't get Web 2.0! Most think it's technology (AJAX, XML, SOA, Web Services, Blogs, WIKIs Chat, etc.) and believe that providing these technologies they'll win users back. There is also (and always) the draconian "We'll block them at the firewall!" approach that so many IT departments use to protect their turf. This won't work either. Users... people are getting better utility from their home computers than from corporate assets.

And the big vendors are in the same boat. They are (for the most part) dinosaurs after the meteor hit, plodding around, making a lot of noise, trying to pretend that everything will be alright, Web 2.0 is just a fade... a bubble, and continuing to spew the fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) to IT managers and execs.

Now is the time for IT leaders to recognise the organisational benefits to increase customers and supplier interaction and decrease operational costs that can be realised by embracing Web 2.0.
