Perhaps, Dell is targeting a different market
A lot of small businesses can move to Linux/GPL such as ubuntu to run their office. Office productivity, such as email, chat, text and document editing, spreadsheets and project management, is abundant in Linux. Further, those offices may not wish to have employees wasting resources and work time playing DVDs, videos or music. Thus the lack of media drivers is not a central issue to these small businesses.

Regardless, most of these media codecs and drivers are available for Linux and ubuntu. But you have to know where to find their repositories in order to apt-get them. Many of these may be infringing on IP, so it's better to avoid them anyway. Anyway, it's around. It's just not on the machine to distract workers.

All in all, the Dell/ubuntu product line may be real attractive to small shops looking to enhance their bottom line instead of tithing to Redmond.
