not nearly as bad as this article would have you believe...
as one of the lead developers of schmedley, I can give you the real facts:

1 - the "sensitive information" we mention in our privacy policy are things like
credit card numbers and such - we will obviously employ heavy security before
collecting and/or transmitting any such data.

2 - Most of the schmedley feature set is available without signing up for a
membership. There are more new features coming in a few months that will
require users to sign up to take advantage of them - and by then, greater security
measures will be in place.

3 - Only about 2% of our current user base are "registered users". The other 98%
have this information stored in a cookie on their local machine - not on our
servers.

4 - For the other 2%, the ONLY piece of information we currently store that you
(and/or your readers) might currently object to is the email password(s) (currently
only Gmail, but Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and other are coming soon). The meebo
interface for instant messaging is an embedded iframe hosted by meebo and your
usernames and passwords go straight to their servers - not ours.

5 - Tons of other sites in this space employ the exact same methods - Netvibes,
Pageflakes, etc. - I can't speak for their security or the privacy policies they
employ in their respective countries - but I can tell you that schmedley is hosted
in the good ol' USA on servers at Media Temple.

Hopefully, the above information will help to calm any fears that may have arisen
as a result of this article.

I really did like the bit at the end re: the identity layer and new identity systems,
and we would gladly employ such a standard as soon as one exists.
