What happens to your music if your vendor goes out of business and you can't 'activate' it any longer?

Same for software. If you buy software that is Product Activated, what happens if they go out of business?

The latter has already happened at least once. As far as I know, paying customers simply lost access to the software.

There really need to be consumer protection laws concerning this.
