Isn't this where OLPC comes in?
So isn't this where OLPC comes in? It doesn't have to apply to third world countries. Students in the US cannot even get computers in most of their classrooms. Implementing the OLPC plan even in US schools could go a long way to helping kids learn and get them started on basic typing skills. There is nothing in the OLPC program that is not just as benefitial to Chicago Public School students as it is to 3rd world students.

I am only twenty-four and a few years ago when I first went to college I did not know how to use powerpoint, when almost everyone else did. Doing something as simple as getting people started in the early grades typing is pretty important IMO. Even if you use a platform such as OpenOffice the interface is largely similar.

The point isn't so much to need to use a system with an interface similar to Office of Windows, but rather to get them to learn to type. That is the harder skill to learn, and children, especially technology literate children, are much more adaptive to learning a new software interface. That could take them days, maybe weeks to learn, whereas typing skills could take years.
