Circa 2015
After the initial roll-out of WiMAX in the late 2000's, ISPs and remaining telcos thought that they had a winner. Revenue jumped tremendously as people migrated to the WiMAX model. THEN something happened - a small open-source firm (call is Sveasoft!) released code to allow WiMAX routers to self-configure a MESH between themselves. Soon everyone was loading the software and dropping ISPs like a rock. Today in 2015, all non-electrical traffic is handled via millions of WiMAX routers. Hurricane pi - the record 35th hurricane of 2012, wiped Miami off the face of the earth - but connectivity with rescue workers was NEVER cut as the MESH re-rerouted traffic via Free Cuba.

No one misses the telephone poles of old, or the silly wires that needed to be built into homes. Not everyone likes the situation, as the FBI and CIA and NSA have been frozen out of eavsdropping since all traffic routes are indeterminate and protected by 2**20 bit encryption. Looking back, the true freedom afforded by the WiMAX Steamroller was the turning point whereas people could for the very first time be free to communicate without any government interference. After the bloody riots in 2010, when the US government tried to outlaw WiMAX under the Patriot Act IV, the proliferation of WiMAX was just too much for a government to reign in, so the Telecommunications act of 2012 enshrined WiMAX as the defacto communications fabric for the entire country. 3 months later when the hurricane hit, people were saved by their WiMAX transcievers - which emergency workers were able to locate easily. President Dean proclaimed WiMAX as the best friend of human kind and awarded the Presidential medal of Freedom to InHell and Cisco and Sprint (now one company) for their tireless efforts in bringing connectivity to the citizens.
