Not What it Seems
We've been told that DRM is needed to "protect content". This is not the case. DRM is being used to take an otherwise widely portable format (mp3) and use DRM to lock the music to specific players and services.

DRM is just another tool of proprietary lock-in. The best way to kill this is to avoid it like the plague. Although given the growing popularity of "locked-in" downloaded music for a fee, I don't see this going away. Unfortunate.
