Descriptors and common semantics - XML should handle that. If you are talking about TRANSLATORS for taking old crappy data and making it into new shiny data - THAT is a monsterous undertaking.

How is THIS for an idea - creating an organization that creates an standard "ecosystem" of related technologies that don't overlap. AJAX and LAMP are examples of this. Writing haute coulture standards where other older and forgotten-about standards work just as well - is a waste of time and energy. This applies to new programming languages as well!
