---How long did it take for WiFi to become widespread?---

I don't know, it's been several years and is nowhere near the ubiquity one would need for the system you've proposed. I want to be able to listen to music on a plane, in my car in the middle of the desert, on the subway, etc. I can do all of that with an iPod. I'm willing to bet it will be at least a decade before I can do that via WiMax.

Note also that WiMax is an Intel product. Am I going to be able to use it with my PPC based Mac?

So what you're saying then, is that this is never, ever going to happen, at least until the death of the RIAA companies. Again, that's going to take a while.

So that means instead of giving my friend a gift, I'd be giving him a list that he would have to purchase. Sorry, not quite the same thing. If he can access it for free, then why would anyone ever bother subscribing, it'll be like p2p networks all over again.

Again, I doubt it. Renting music is not steamrollering over buying music. It's an unproven business model, and one with severe drawbacks.
