The Streaming Paradigm
How long did it take for WiFi to become widespread? There was the Apple "Airport" that was around for years before that, and it didn't gain the same traction. Point is - a new technology that is "better" and offers "more stuff" will gain traction very fast. Look how long 802.11b equipment will stay for sale now that 802.11g is around (and getting cheaper). I don't see that .11b stuff anymore. What am I saying here? The advantages of the WiMAX steamroller over the .11g stuff will see the .11g stuff going the way of the .11b stuff. This means that "critical mass" of WiMAX could come in 2 years or so.

Once the ISPs have stupidly gone to WiMAX, and people have flocked to it, people will figure out that you DON"T NEED THE ISPs ANYMORE! Share your WiMAX via meshing, and YOU BECOME the telco! The mesh will overtake the internet, and your surfing experience will INDEED be free (as in beer AND freedom both).

As for the streaming paradigm, you COULD implement "a la carte" or buffet. If you buy your music alacarte, the RIAA would be FORCED to do something they NEVER WANTED TO DO - which is to let you buy a LICENSE to a song, instead of the MEDIA. This means NO more upgrade money for the RIAA! They will be forced into it since the streaming paradigm gives them so many positives - like cutting piracy down to size.

You could also get your music in a subscription model, and there would be MANY "plans" for you to choose from. You could bill by hours used, or songs played, or a single monthly payment for all you can eat. Your "CD Mix" for your friends would be a simple playlist on the music webportal. I'm sure there would be a market for "DJ" services - where someone creates custom playlists (which is what DJs do today anyway). Doing the Steve Jobs "shuffle" on a million-entry songlist might not be what people want.

IN ADDITION to the paid music web portal service, the webportal could offer FREE music! Of course there would be embedded commercials - but that's no different than radio today.

This paradigm WILL take over the world - and soon. It offers so much, and would cost so little. Take off your blinders of what is current, and see the promise of the future. Its pretty bright (I have to wear shades!) wink
