*shaking head*
I didn't understand the lure of pet rocks and bennie babies either - I guess that after all is said and done, an iPod is useful, whereas the others are not. I had questions about the IQ of the pet rockers - as I do about the iPodders, but maybe its not lack of IQ - but lack of wisdom that I have trouble with. Every year, new ways of listening to music come out, and people flock to them - even if the older tech works just fine. The lure of the iPod is the lure of music without comercials - but the Sony walkman and diskman gave that to us years ago. So I guess the lure of the iPod is to save space. No carrying around stacks of CDs or cassettes - but the media has a "single-point-of-failure" that the previous generations didn't have - losing an iPod harddrive means NO music - whereas losing a CD meant just losing SOME of your music. This hassle of backing up and keeping track of your MP3 tunes will be changed with the next paradigm - That's right, the WiMAX steamroller. Why save files yourself, when you can just connect to the internet and PLAY them? I wonder how much a $300-$400 iPod will be going for on eBay (in 2 years), when a $300 WiMAX handheld provides all things electronic (VoIP, audio, video, web)?
