these companies are trying to all generate two different revenue streams...one off of the users via subscriptions and one via the advertisers.
the reason why tivo is configured the way it is is to allow tivo to report to advertisers EXACTLY who watched what and when.
if you're smart...you'll dump tivo and encourage all of your friends to do the same.
