I also remember software only running on a specific version of DOS from a specific manufacturer. I had a Tandy 2000 at one time, which used a special version of DOS. All software had to be written specially for the Tandy 2000. Guess what happened to that product, along with all the others with customized versions of DOS?
It wasn't until the PC was 'standardized' on MS-DOS and every machine running MS-DOS could run every program written for MS-DOS did the PC parket really take off. The market may have been more interesting, but it was certainly more expensive.
