They threatened to take night jobs...
... in order to eke out the meager pittances a grudging world tossed them like gristly scraps from the table.

But we do need a sense of proportion.
When a company spirals down into bankruptcy, the last thing they do before filing the papers is to vote all the top executives a retention bonus, $ millions each so they won't use their glowing resumes to get higher paying jobs elsewhere.
