How about M$ lovers switching their Micro-soft drained brains for PPC CPUs
If ANYONE believes APPLE who is a hard ball niche player are going to "switch" to Intel and stop making PPC-based personal and desktop computers only because INTEL is a mass-market a-la-chinese volume discounter either you are smoking something too good or your Billy loving brain needs a PPC CPU to function coherently and logically.
If anything, APPLE could choose to offer a "first" x86 low grade APPLE, like the mini-Mac, with OS X ported inside and of course a very limited set of graphic chip drivers that basically run on their hardware-software offering and that is it. The price of this mini would be way in the $299 range rather than the $499 range of the PPC miniMac. When a new customer gets used to Tiger in this cheap setup, its next computer would most likely be a better Mac. period. That's how niche players operate.
Bill, Ballmer, Intel, Dell, all function a-la-chinese volume discounters. They are not niche players..Apple does not care one bit about being a Billy or being like a Michael Dell, it cares about jocking for prestige and bucks.
Apple has a very tough competition against script and command line *nix clone servers (FreeBSD,Linux) on cheapo (compared to Xserve-Xraid) X86 hardware. It only has the edge with graphic houses where APPLE's more expensive server-raid make SENSE to have around to make things run much smoother, but APPLE is no match in Price-performance vs Apache on FreeBSD on a cheap Dell server. Slowly as Apache gains more and more ground among medium and small businesses that host internet services over IIS-W2003, X86 hardware with Linux or *BSD offer a cheaper initial and replacement cost than Apple's more sophisticated hardware (which because of market dynamics is more expensive to produce than Intel's or AMD's)
But when it comes to the desktop (billy's turf), Apple, could give Dell a run for the low money IF they chose to offer an x86 mini-mac. this offering could run an upgraded version of XP and OS X and still be cheaper than todays minimac based on the PPC architecture. That would make sense. Will they do it and still give a 1-year warranty w/o the apple's extended 2 year warranty ? that's the question. Billy is all about marketing volume discounting and "shoving" CD's into x86 computers. I even believe Billy eventually will move away from the PA-RISC (Itanium) business. He did it before in the past (remember NT's 4 architectural versions?). Michael Dell is all about marketing price-slashed hardware with Billy inside. Apple is about prestige and followers or groupies, and specialized graphic people who thumb their nose at anything on top of their graphic desks that's not a Mac. period.
