RE: Nintendo--The company traditionally comes up with an entirely new name for each console.

Now here's an interesting tidbit. Nintendo was originally colaborating with Sony to make a SNES-CD system codenamed "Play Station". Nintendo changed their mind and wanted to go cart based (N64), so Sony said went ahead and made the system standalone.

PlayStation now enjoys branding for (soon to be) 5 systems:
PlayStation
PlayStation 2
PSX
PSP
PlayStation 3 =) (gooo Sony)
