Apple paid Xerox to view the work, then applied it to computing
Most work I've seen on this topic agrees that Xerox was focused on being a photocopier company. They didn't see how the GUI research could be applied to computing. Jobs & co could and they adapted what they saw to their industry. Now, we all benefit (including the IT "experts" who claimed that a GUI meant that the Mac was merely a toy).
