The specs tell FireWire transfers 400Mb/s and USB2.0 480 Mb/
s.
That sounds like USB 2.0 is better when it comes to speed and
on top of that is cheaper.


USB 2 is only faster if it's native (on the motherboard, not on a
PCI card). It also doesn't have the sustained transfer rate of
Firewire. Also of note Firewire 2 is out, Apple calls it Firewire
800 (as in 800 megabits/sec). As for being more expensive,
again it depends on what machine you're using. All G5 towers
have Firewire 800 built in, so there is no additional cost. On a pc
you would have to eother buy an expensive pc, or add a card.
The average $199 Walmart special won't have Firewire.
