Why the MC3 fascination?
Agreed, there were lots and lots of mp3 players out before the iPod. But somehow, the iPod has caught on in a way that no mp3 player before, or since, has been able to do so. The obvious question is, why is this? I'd say a variety of factors:
1. Great design, features and function
2. Great reviews
3. Advertising and hype

---but they never seem to get any recognition, do they---

Ask yourself why this is. Probably a combination of:
1. They're not as good as an iPod
2. They're not as well marketed

---As a result, I wouldn't use an APPLE product even if I was PAID TO....well...MAYBE if they paid me!---

I feel sorry for you, if you're willing to let the choices of the media and the masses make your decisions for you. Why not think for yourself, and make your own decisions?

--- Where was the ADULATION for Kodak, when they made the MC3, over 4 YEARS AGO?---

It got a lot of press, but, like most hybrid devices, it did a lot of things in an average manner, and nothing really well. The iPod does one thing and does it really well. Do a Google search for Kodak MC3 review and you'll see there were lots and lots of articles about it. Many, however read like this one:
http://formen.ign.com/news/38300.html

Comments: It's hard to pull off this type of device. The concept just always seems miles beyond its execution. I suppose the old jack-of-all-trades adage is applicable, as they often end up masters of absolutely nothing. And, sadly, the mc3 falls plainly into this category. I say "sadly" because Kodak has released some very nice, very affordable, digital cameras, most notably the DC4800 Zoom.

It's important to keep in mind that the mc3 is aimed at neither serious shutterbugs nor MP3 fanatics, and I don't think that Kodak hides this fact. The intended user would use the device for very basic images, mostly e-mail attachments and the like, and similarly basic MP3 usage. However, even from this perspective, it would be difficult to recommend the mc3 to anyone except for those who were absolutely certain that they would never become more interested in either type of digital fun. The player does have a few things going for it ? it ships with a 64MB CompactFlash card, for instance ? but they are overshadowed by its meager offerings.
