Missing the point...
I believe you are both missing the point of using the iPod as a hard drive.

Yes, the iPod can act as a removable hard drive, but songs that you store in the hard drive part of the iPod are not playable by the iPod. I think what he is getting at is why can't he simply copy his songs directly to the iPod as if it is a hard disk and have them recognized and playable? Several other MP3 playes on the market act exactly this way, particularly flash players. With this type of design, iTunes (or any other music software) is not necessary at all for copying music to the player. The contention is that Apple did not do this because of copyright fears, but it also makes the player more difficult to use.
