The iPod does act as an external drive...
at least when plugged into a Mac. (I haven't tried it on a Windows box)

That's one of the selling features often missed in dismissing the iPod as nothing more than a glorified mp3 player. It's a hard drive for storage and can be used as a boot drive (carry your "computer environment" (OS, apps & data) around with you... just plug it into a Mac/CPU and go to work).

I do not own an iPod but do work in an educational (college) environment and I constantly have students bring files to me on their iPods. I just plug it in (thru Firewire) and the iPod automatically appears on the Mac's desktop.

Just drag & drop files between drives to copy (as you would any other built-in or additional drives) or open file as you normally would... it's completely transparent.
