I'm not Dell fan
I build my own systems for the most part. We have purchased Dell machines in the past and I've had to upgrade them. I never had any issues with that. Could you explain what about Dell machines is "non-standard"?

Your poor performance comment - I would say might be the options you selected when configuring the system. You'll get poor performance when you select the cheaper parts - but thats all realative to what your doing anyway. Try reading up on hardware specs.
