After trying a number of other computer suppliers through the years, my company's last three deployments have been Dells. The number of malfunctions and problems has been relatively few. My personal PCs in those deployments (two laptops and a desktop) have performed flawlessly. We also use Dells as laboratory instrument controllers and have again had no problems in what can be some relatively corrosive atmospheric conditions. I also purchased a desktop for home use two years ago and it has run faithfully without even a hiccup.
I'm sure that there are a lot of people out there who have had problems with Dell. Just as I'm sure that there are a lot of people who have had problems with other brands. It's the same with automobiles, home appliances, other consumer electronics, etc. When you've had a bad experience, you tend to shy away from the company that gave you that bad experience. But to generalize to the extent that all products from said companies are garbage is a bit harsh. I had a problem with a Pontiac automobile and I will never buy one again. I also had a problem with a Hitachi camcorder and will never buy one again. Yet, I know lots of people with Pontiacs and Hitachis who are very happy and experiencing problem free ownership. It would hardly be fair for me to say that all their stuff is garbage because I had a bad experience.
Overall, I think that almost all PC suppliers have "cheapened" their products just to stay competitive. I've been tinkering with some old PCs I had stashed away at home and it's amazing how much more "solid" the components and cases were six or seven years ago compared to what they are now. - Posted by: john_chodkowski@...
