Holes in the top

It seems that computer makers have forgotten that heat rises.

Years ago we had a number of desktops (the kind where you
could place the monitor on top), with holes in the top. They
were very quiet. They always came with a warning not to block
the vents. Since towers came along, I've never seen one with
holes in the top - allowing convection to do its thing.

When Apple introduced the iMac, it had holes in the top (it had
to exhaust heat from the monitor as well as cpu), and intake
holes on the bottom. Later, they were able to give you a fanless
iMac - due to the holes in the top and the cool running temp of
the G3. That's the only truly quiet computer I can remember.
With the G4, you needed fans.

I wonder how much cooler towers would run if they just put
holes in the top of the machines to exhaust heat and intakes
lower down or on the bottom.
