Actually most 7,200 or 10,000rpm hard drives especially Western Digital or Maxtor have anti-noise reduction features built in. They are really quite. You could actually buy front mount hard drive fans from Antec to keep them even quiter and cooler at the same time.

Antec has smart fans which adjust their speed according to how much heat is detected and slows down or speeds up accordingly. But gerenally speaking they also make the fans dual-ball bearing which also runs a lot quieter. All the noise you hear from other fans is the ball bearings generating noise from friction, AKA metal rubbing against plastic.
