I totally agree with your analysis. I think these cards are a great leap forward.

There are 2 problems that I see:
1) There is less revenue to the cable company if a consumer uses a cable card for the reasons you mentioned. Why is Comcast charging over $10 more for VOIP than Vonage? I guess because they can, for now. Consumers don't know any better. I see the same paradigm setting itself up. I would even wager some barley pops that Comcast and others will have their own "specially" branded cards that will cost more and give you no additional capabilities.

2) The cable company has less control over the consumer. A big no-no for these guys it seems. If you own your card then you can walk away to satellite much easier.
